British Film Institute (BFI) was established by Royal Charter to create the world of films, BFI has many organisations such as, the BFI Southbank and the IMAX theatre. The British Film Institution was founded in 1933, and it promotes education about film, television and the moving image generally. The BFI distributes cultural cinema to other venues, each year they distribute over 800 venues all across the UK. Also the BFI runs the annual London Film Festival which gains a lot of publicity and a large number of audiences participate in this.
Today the BFI is currently managed on a day-to-day basis by its director, Amanda Nevill. The current chair is Greg Dyke, who took the office on the 1st March 2008. The chair of the board is appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport who receives recommendations from the UK Film Council. Other board members are co-opted by existing board members when required. These appointments are subject to ratification by the UK Film Council. The BFI operates with three sources of income. The largest is public money allocated through the UK Film Council from the funds given to it by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
